December 10, 2003 Game 26: Devils Beat Islanders, 1-0 Elias in OT!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders, 1-0 at
home on Wednesday, December 10, 2003. The shutout was the sixth of the
season for Martin Brodeur and the 70th of his career.
There was no scoring in the first period, though the Devils
dominated the Islanders getting many quality scoring chances and outshooting
them 12-5.
The game remained scoreless after a second period of play, in
which the Devils continued to outplay the Islanders -- outshooting them
13-4.
The third period, though played much more closely than the
previous two, ended with no goals scored for either team. The Islanders
outshot the Devils 9-8 in the period.
Just 16 seconds into the overtime period, Patrik Elias was hauled
down illegally and was awarded a penalty shot. Though Elias made a great
move to get Garth Snow down and out of his net, he was unable to elevate the
puck over Snow's pads.
103 seconds later - at 2:09 of the overtim, Elias beat Snow to
win the game. Elias' eighth goal of the season was assisted by Scott
Gomez and Paul Martin.
