October 08, 2003 Game 1: Season Opener - Devils & Bruins: 3-3 Tie
The New Jersey Devils opened the 2003-2004
season against the Bruins in Boston on Wednesday, October 8,
2003. The teams skated to a 3-3 tie.
There was no scoring, but the Devils outshot the Bruins 13-4 in
the first period.
Scott Niedermayer gave the Devils a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into
the second period with a power-play goal. Niedermayer's 1st goal of the
season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez.
Jeff Friesen improved the Devils power-play percentage (now 2 for
3 on the season) by beating Felix Potvin at 12:40 of the second period.
The power-play goal, assisted by Igor Larionov and Brian Rafafalski was
Friesen's 1st goal of the season, and gave the Devils a 2-0 lead.
Just 1:51 after Friesen's goal, on a Martin Brodeur interference
penalty, Jeff Jillson scored an unassisted power-play goal to cut the Devils
lead in half. Joe Thornton tied the game, 2-2, with only 16 seconds
remaining in period.
The second period ended with the game tied. The Bruins
outshot the Devils 15-14 in the period.
Scott Niedermayer recorded his 100th career goal at 9:34 of the
third period on the power-play. Niedermayer's 2nd goal of the game was
assisted by Igor Larionov and Brian Rafalski.
Jeff Jillson recorded his 2nd goal of the game for the Bruins
with 3:58 remaining in the third period to tie the game, 3-3.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3. The shots were
even, 6-6 in the third period.
There was no scoring in the overtime period, but Boston outshot
New Jersey 6-2 in the extra session. The Devils outshot the Bruins 35-31
in the game, but Boston won 57% of the faceoffs.
