April 04, 2003 Game 81: Devils Knockout Rangers, 2-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Rangers, 2-1 in New York,
eliminating the Rangers from the playoff race, on Friday, April 4, 2003.
There was no scoring in the first period - the teams each had an
abbreviated power-play, but were unable to convert. The Devils outshot
the Rangers, 18-9 in the period.
Petr Nedved beat Martin Brodeur at 2:00 of the second period, on
the power-play to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Scott Niedermayer beat Mike Dunham at 4:43 of the second period,
on the power-play to tie the game, 1-1. Niedermayer's 11th goal of the
season was assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and Jeff Friesen.
Jeff Friesen blasted the puck through Dunham at 14:54 of the
second period to give the Devils their first lead of the game. Joe
Nieuwendyk and Brian Rafalski assisted on Friesen's 23rd goal of the
season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers, 2-1.
The Devils outshot the Rangers, 16-5 in the period.
There was no scoring in the the third period. The Devils
were outshot by the Rangers, 7-5 in the third period, but outshot them 41-19,
in the game.
