March 08, 2003 Game 67: Devils Beat Islanders 4-2
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Islanders, 4-2, on Long Island
on Saturday, March 8, 2003.
Mattias Weinhandl beat Martin Brodeur just 50 seconds into the
first period to give the Islanders and early 1-0 lead.
Jeff Friesen popped the puck past Chris Osgood at 9:36 of the
first after taking a nice pass from Jamie Langenbrunner. Langenbrunner
got the only assist on Friesen's 21st goal of the season.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The
Islanders outshot the Devils 18-7 in the period.
Alexei Yashin beat Brodeur just 10 seconds after an early second
period Islanders power-play to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead 2:35 into the
period.
Brian Gionta recorded his 9th goal of the season, beating Osgood
at 4:25 of the second. John Madden and Jay Pandolfo assisted on Gionta's
goal.
Brian Gionta gave the Devils their first lead of the game at
16:04 of the second period, with his second goal of the game. Patrik
Elias assisted on Gionta's 10th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders,
3-2. The Islanders outshot the Devils 8-5 in the period.
Joe Nieuwendyk scored an empty net goal with 14 seconds
remaining in the third period to seal the win for the Devils. Jamie
Langenbrunner and Scott Stevens assisted on Nieuwendyk's 14th goal of the
season.
The game ended with the Devils beating the Islanders, 4-2.
The Islanders outshot the Devils 14-7 in the third period and 40-19 in the
game.
The win gave Martin Brodeur his 35th of the season - making him
the first goaltender to record 35 or more wins in 7 straight seasons.
The game was Joe Nieuwendyk's 1,100th career NHL game.
