February 05, 2003 Game 52: Devils Defeat Capitals, 4-1, Madden Trick!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Capitals, 4-1 in Washington
on February 5, 2003. John Madden recorded his second career hat
trick in the win.
Sergei Brylin left with a possible wrist fracture early in the
first period after a collision along the boards with Colin White.
The first period ended with no scoring. The Devils outshot
the Capitals 10-7 in the period.
Michael Nylander beat Brodeur at 4:49 of the second period to
give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.
Turner Stevenson blasted the puck past Olaf Kolzig to tie the
game at 9:59. Jiri Bicek and John Madden assisted on Stevenson's 5th
goal of the season.
John Madden gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 16:47 of the second
period. Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias assisted on Madden's 11th goal
of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Caps 2-1.
The Devils outshot the Capitals 20-15 in the period.
John Madden flipped the puck over Kolzig at 6:12 of the third
period to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Madden's 2nd goal of the game was
assisted by Jay Pandolfo and Patrik Elias.
John Madden completed the natural hat trick with an empty net
goal with just 53 seconds remaining in the game. Patrik Elias got the
only assist on Madden's 13th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 4-1. The Devils
outshot the Caps 9-6 in the third period and 39-28 in the game.
Mike Rupp and Stephen Guolla were the Devils scratches.
