Game 46: Devils Beat Sharks, 5-4 in OT!

    The New Jersey Devils defeated the Sharks, 5-4 in overtime, in San Jose on Wednesday, January 22, 2003.

    Ex-Shark, Jeff Friesen gave the Devils a 1-0 lead just 4:36 into the first period, by beating Miikka Kiprusoff with a nice shot.   Jamie Langenbrunner and Joe Nieuwendyk assisted on Friesen's 12th goal of the season.

    Owen Nolan tied the game at 7:19.

    Scott Niedermayer gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 15:47 in a goal- mouth scramble.   Joe Nieuwendyk and Jeff Friesen assisted on Niedermayer's 7th goal of the season.

    Sergei Brylin blasted the puck past Kiprusoff at 16:48 of the first, on the penalty-kill.   Brylin's 11th goal of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias.

    Owen Nolan got his second goal of the period at at 17:43 on the power-play.

    The first period ended with the Devils leading the Sharks, 3-2.   The Devils outshot the Sharks, 10-8 in the period.

    There was no scoring in the second period, it ended with the Devils still leading the Sharks, 3-2.   The Sharks outshot the Devils, 11-7 in the period.

    Patrick Marleau tied the game at 6:46 of the third period.   Adam Graves gave the Sharks their first lead of the game, just 33 seconds later.

    Joe Nieuwendyk forced overtime by beating Kiprusoff with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation time.   Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Niedermayer assisted on Nieuwendyk's 7th goal of the season.

    Regulation time ended with the game tied, 4-4.   The shots were even, 14-14 in the third period.

    With just 28 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Joe Nieuwendyk struck again to win the game for the Devils.   Brian Rafalski assisted on Nieuwendyk's 8th goal of the season.

    The Devils outshot the Sharks 5-3 in overtime, but the shots were even, 36-36 in the game.

    The game was the only meeting between the two teams this season.   Last season the Devils won the only matchup, 6-1 in New Jersey.   The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 12-6-2-1.

    Martin Brodeur recorded his 350th career win with the win in San Jose.
