January 15, 2003 Game 43: Devils Shutout Islanders: 5-0
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders, 5-0, in
East Rutherford on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. Martin Brodeur
recorded his 60th career shutout.
Mike Rupp squared off with Aaron Asham at 6:47 of the first
period - his first fight, in his 2nd NHL game. Rupp had a good start to
the battle, but Asham won the fight in the end.
Jeff Friesen took a nice feed from Joe Nieuwendyk and smacked the
puck past Chris Osgood at 16:07 of the first period. Friesen's 11th goal
of the season was also assisted by Christian Berglund.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders
1-0. The Islanders outshot the Devils 7-6 in the period.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 11:45 of the second
period. Elias's 12th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez and
Jiri Bicek.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders,
2-0. The shots were even, 10-10 in the period.
Oleg Tverdovsky blasted the puck from the point past Osgood at
4:28 of the third period on the power-play. Jeff Friesen and Jamie
Langenbrunner assisted on Tverdovsky's 5th goal of the season.
Sergei Brylin with some hard work at 9:23 gave the Devils a 4
goal lead. John Madden and Tommy Albelin assisted on Brylin's 10th goal
of the season.
Jamie Langenbrunner made it 5-0 with 3:49 remaining with a nice
tip of a Scott Niedermayer blast. Colin White also assisted on
Langenbrunner's 12th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 5-0. The Devils
outshot the Islanders 13-10 in the third period and 29-27 in the game.
Tommy Albelin skated as a forward, because Turner Stevenson was
out of the lineup with a bruised right ankle.
The game was the first meeting of the two teams this season, but
they will meet 4 more times before the regular season ends.
Tommy Albelin recorded his 200th career NHL assist on Sergei
Brylin's goal.
Scott Niedermayer recorded his 400th career NHL point on Jamie
Langenbrunner's goal.
