January 10, 2003 Game 40: Devils Beat Panthers, 2-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Panthers, 2-1, in Florida on
Friday, January 10, 2003. The Devils defense had a strong game.
The first period ended with the game scoreless. The Devils
outshot the Panthers 17-8 in the period.
Christian Berglund beat Roberto Luongo with a nice backhand shot
from a rebound at 5:08 of the second period. Jamie Langenbrunner and
Tommy Albelin got assists on Berglund's 4th goal of the season.
Scott Gomez put the puck past Luongo as he was being knocked to
the ice at 11:56 to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Jeff Friesen recorded
the only assist on Gomez's 6th goal of the season.
Scott Stevens took a questionable roughing penalty at 12:52 of
the second. He argued the call, and was handed another 2 minutes for
unsportsmanlike conduct. Even after entering the box, Stevens continued
to argue; and was then assessed a 10 minute misconduct penalty.
The second period ended with the Devils leading, 2-0, though the
Panthers outshot the Devils 15-9 in the period.
With Scott Stevens still serving his penalty time in the box,

White accepted, but was out-fought by the heavy-weight number 8.
Olli Jokinen cut the Devils lead to 1 goal at 7:49 of the third
period by beating Brodeur on the power-play.
The game period ended with the Devils winning, 2-1. The

6 opptortunies with the man-advantage, and were able to score once. The
Devils defense was assessed 21 total penalty minutes (14 Stevens, 5 White, 2
Niedermayer). At one point, Stevens, Niedermayer, and White were all in
the penalty box at the same time.
Scott Niedermayer led all Devils in ice-time with 25:53.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 23-12-7-0 and are
11-7-4-0 in Florida. The season series is now tied, 1-1-0-0. The
teams will meet again on January 13 and on March 24.
Defensemen Colin White returned to the lineup, while Oleg
