Game 36: Panthers Beat Devils: 2-1

    The New Jersey Devils were defeated, 2-1 at home by the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, January 1, 2002.

    Sergei Brylin gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 9:24 on the power-play.   Brylin's 9th goal of the season was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and Brian Rafalski.

    Marcus Nilson tied the game by beating Martin Brodeur at 17:25 of the first period after Scott Stevens was taken down in front of Brodeur.

    The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1.   The Devils outshot the Panthers, 9-7 in the period.

    Branislav Mezei gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead at 16:30 of the second period while Brian Gionta was down and Christian Berglund was tied up in the Panthers zone.

    The second period ended with the Panthers leading, 2-1.   The Devils outshot the Panthers 7-6 in the period.

    There was no scoring in the third period, the game ended with the Panthers winning, 2-1.   The Devils outshot the Panthers, 10-1 in the third period and 27-14 in the game.

    The game is the first meeting between the two teams this season.   The teams will meet two more times in January and once in March.

    The Devils lead the lifetime series, 22-12-7-0, and are 12-5-3-0 in New Jersey.   Last season the Devils won the series, 3-1-0-0.

    Jiri Bicek and Tommy Albelin were healthy scratches for the Devils.
