December 12, 2002 Game 27: Devils Lose 4-2 in Columbus - Nieds Nets 2
The New Jersey Devils were defeated, 4-2 by the Blue
Jackets in Columbus on Thursday, December 12, 2002.
Scott Niedermayer scored his 4th goal of the season just
3:20 into the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Scott
Gomez and Turner Stevenson assisted on Niedermayer's goal..
Andrew Cassels tied the game on the power-play at 6:33 of
the first period.
The first period ended game tied, 1-1. The shots
were also even at 14-14.
Ray Whitney beat Brodeur 3:21 on the power-play to give
the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Jim McKenzie fought Jody Shelley at 12:34 of the second
period. After hitting Shelley a number of times in the body and
helmet, McKenzie decided he'd prefer to hit Shelley on the skull - so
he removed his helmut. He then proceded to punch Shelly's
unprotected head.
David Vyborny gave the Blue Jackets a 3-1 lead at 15:09
of the second period.
The second period ended with Columbus leading the Devils,
3-1. The shots were even 9-9 in the period.
Scott Niedermayer beat Denis at 17:08 of the third period
to cut the Blue Jackets lead to 3-2. Jamie Langenbrunner and Jay
Pandolfo assisted on Niedermayer's 2nd goal of the night (and 5th of the
season).
Tyler Wright got an empty net goal with 38 seconds remaining
to seal the win for the Blue Jackets.
The game ended with the Blue Jackets defeating the Devils,
4-2. The Devils outshot Columbus 19-6 in the third period and
42-29 in the game.
The lifetime series is now tied, 2-2-1-0 but the Devils now
trail 1-2-0-0 in Columbus.
Brian Rafalski (bruised ribs), Jiri Bicek (healthy), and
Corey Schwab (viral infection) were the Devils scratches.
