Game 23: Devils Fall to Canucks, 3-2 in OT

The New Jersey Devils were defeated 3-2 in OT at home by the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, December 4, 2002.

Trevor Lindon beat Brodeur just 5 seconds after the Devils killed off a penalty to Christian Berglund.   The Vancouver goal came at 12:50 of the first period.

Until Lindon's goal the Devils had been clearly outplaying the Canucks - even on the Canucks power-play, the Devils appeared to be in control of the game.   They had a quick pace going, which seemed to be difficult for the Canucks handle.   Vancouver seemed tired, with good reason, as the game was the 6th game on a long road trip.   They also had a 10 game winning streak ended by the Islanders the night before.

The first period ended with the Canucks leading the Devils, 1-0.   Vancouver outshot New Jersey 10-7 in the period.

Scott Niedermayer tied the game at 16:16 of the second period.   His 3rd goal of the season was assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and John Madden.

Brian Gionta beat Dan Cloutier at 18:46 to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.   Christian Berglund and Sergei Brylin assisted on Gionta's 6th goal of the season.

The Devils continued to dominate play in the second period, outshooting the Canucks 16-7, and leading 2-1 on the scoreboard.

The Devils changed their style in the third period, playing more defensively and letting Vancouver be the aggressor.   The pace of the game slowed, to the advantage of the Canucks.

Todd Bertuzzi crossed-checked Brian Rafalski in front of Brodeur, and took a pass from Markus Naslund at 6:47.   He quickly put the puck past Brodeur - he was not penalized and the goal counted.

Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2   The Canucks outshot the Devils 9-3 in the third period.

Bertuzzi beat Brodeur 56 seconds into the overtime period to win the game for Vancouver.

Sergei Brylin recorded his 100th career NHL assist on Gionta's goal.

The Canucks now lead the lifetime series, 26-17-4, but the Devils lead 12-10-2 in New Jersey.

The last three (and 6 of their last 8) Devils' games have seen regulation time end with the game tied.
