November 30, 2002 Game 21: Devils Beat St. Louis, 5-4 in OT!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Blues 5-4 in overtime on
Saturday, November 30, 2002 in St. Louis. Jeff Friesen got the
overtime game winning goal with just 12 seconds left on the clock.
Scott Gomez gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the first
period, by putting his own rebound past Blues goaltender, Fred Brathwaite.
Gomez's 4th goal of the season was assisted by Brian Gionta.
Dallas drake beat Martin Brodeur at 7:30 of the first to
tie the game, 1-1.
The Blues took a 2-1 lead when Petr Cajanek beat Brodeur with
a waist-high deflection at 11:25 of the first period.
The first period ended with the Blues leading the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Blues, 7-6 in the period.
Turner Stevenson beat Brathwaite at 4:37 of the second period
to tie the game, 2-2. Stevenson's 2nd goal of the season was assisted
by Scott Niedermayer and Colin White.
Just 50 seconds after Stevenson's goal, Cory Stillman re-gained
the Blues 1 goal lead.
The second period ended with the Blues leading the Devils,
3-2. The Devils outshot the Blues, 14-5 in the period.
Brian Gionta tied the game, 3-3 just 2:24 into the third
period by knocking the puck out of the air past Brathwaite. Scott
Gomez and Patrik Elias assisted on Gionta's 4th goal of the season.
Scott Niedermayer broke through three Blues at 8:21 of the
third period and put the puck past Brathwaite to give the Devils a 4-3
lead. Niedermayer's 2nd goal of the season was unassisted.
Pavel Demitra tied the game just 1:29 after Niedermayer's
goal.
Madden was a few inches away from winning the game with just
seconds remaining in the third - but regulation time ended with the game
tied, 4-4. The Devils outshot the Blues 9-2 in the third period.
Gomez rang the puck off the post behind Brathwaite 1:25 into
the overtime period. Brodeur made a few brilliant saves to keep the
Devils in it, but..
Jeff Friesen won the game with 12 seconds remaining in
overtime! Joe Nieuwendyk and Brian Rafalski assisted on Friesen's
6th goal of the season.
Tommy Albelin made his second appearance this season, in the
lineup for Ken Daneyko - who was a healthy scratch.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 22-18-6-1, but are
8-11-4-1 in St. Louis. Last season the Devils won the only game
between the teams, 2-1. The teams will meet again on December 10,
2002 in New Jersey.
Martin Brodeur started in goal for the Devils, after
receiving a rare night off on Friday - the first game of back-to-back
road games.
