November 12, 2002 Game 13: Devs Rally to 3-2 Overtime Win Over Ducks
The Devils rallied from a 0-2 third period deficit to defeat
the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, 3-2 in Overtime at the Meadowlands on Tuesday,
November 12, 2002.
Andy McDonald gave the Ducks an early lead by beating Brodeur
at 2:14 of the first period. His goal was assisted by Jason Krog and
ex-Devil, Petr Sykora.
Jim McKenzie fought Mike Brown 6:06 into the first period and
Turner Stevenson fought Kevin Sawyer at 13:36. Both fights were brief,
with not many punches landed. Stevenson took a huge swing, though did
not connect.
The first period ended with the Ducks leading the Devils,
1-0. Anaheim also outshot New Jersey 13-7 in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period, but the Devils
outshot the Mighty Ducks 14-10 in the period.
Marc Chouinard gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead at 6:54 of the
third period. The goal was unassisted, scored shorthanded.
Jamie Langenbrunner got the Devils back within one goal at
7:49 of the period. Langenbrunner's fourth goal of the season was
assisted by Jim McKenzie and Oleg Tverdovsky.
Scott Gomez tied the game just 29 seconds later with a nice
shot - beating Jean-Sebastien Giguere at 8:18 of the third period.
Gomez's second goal of the season was assisted by Jeff Friesen and Joe
Nieuwendyk.
The third period ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Mighty Ducks outshot the Devils 11-7 in the third.
3:04 into the five minute overtime period, Jamie Langenbrunner
ended the game with a Devils win. His second goal of the game and
fifth of the season was assisted by Scott Stevens.
The Devils outshot the Ducks 4-1 in the overtime, but were
outshot 35-32 in the game.
Petr Sykora was welcomed with cheers on his first return
visit to Continental Airlines Arena since being traded to Anaheim in
July.
The two teams will meet again in Anaheim on Friday,
January 24, 2003.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 11-5-0-0, and 7-1-0-0
at home.
The Devils had four power-play opportunities in the game, but
were unable to convert on any of their chances. Their league worst
power-play has now dropped to 5 goals in 62 opportunities (8.0%).
Jay Pandolfo (groin), Stephen Guolla (hamstring), and Tommy
Albelin (healthy) were scratches for the Devils.
