November 02, 2002 Game 9: Devils Beat Chicago, 5-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Chicago Blackhawks by a
score of 5-1 in the Meadowlands on Saturday, November 2, 2002.
Jamie Langenbrunner beat Steve Passmore, just 10 seconds
into the game to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Jay Pandolfo
and John Madden got assists on Langenbrunner's first goal of the season.
Jay Pandolfo got his first goal of the season at 3:32 putting
a rebound in the back of the Hawks net. Oleg Tverdovsky and John
Madden got assists on Pandolfo's goal.
Shawn Thornton tried to fire his team up by engaging Jim
McKenzie in a fight at 5:49. The two players took fighting majors,
but no punches were actually thrown.
Jamie Langenbrunner got his second goal of the game at 18:19
to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. He took the puck away from Chris
Simon in the Hawks zone, and quickly put the puck past Passmore.
The first period ended with the Devils leading, 3-0 and
outshooting the Blackhawks 11-4.
Former Devil Lyle Odelein beat Brodeur at 1:19 of the
second period, cutting the Devils lead to 3-1.
The Devils had 1:04 of 5-3 power-play time mid-way through
the second period, but were unable to capitalize.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the
Blackhawks 3-1. They outshot Chicago 16-10 in the period.
Joe Nieuwendyk beat Passmore just 36 seconds into the third
period, giving the Devils a 4-1 lead. Sergei Brylin and Bryan Gionta
got assists on the goal.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 4 goal lead by beating
Passmore at 7:51 of the third period. Elias's 4th goal of the season
was assisted by Oleg Tverdovsky and Jeff Friesen.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 5-1. The
Devils outshot the Blackhawks 41-18 in the game.
The meeting was the only one between the two teams this
season. The Devils are 20-17-10 lifetime against the Blackhawks.
Jay Pandolfo returned to the lineup, but
Stephen Guolla is not expected to be available until Tuesday.
It was Devils youth jersey day at the arena, so all fans
under the age of 13 in attendance received a number 26 youth jersey.
