October 29, 2002 Game 8: Devils Lose to Hurricanes, 1-2
The New Jersey Devils lost at home, 2-1 to the Carolina
Hurricanes on Tuesday, October 29, 2002.
The Devils record dropped to 6-2 with their only losses
this season coming to Kevin Weekes and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Their record against the Hurricanes lifetime now stands at 34-29-9.
Jaroslav Svoboda beat Brodeur off a rebound at 7:15 of
the first period, to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
Jeff Friesen blasted a shot past Weekes at 10:06 of the
first period to tie the game, 1-1. Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski
got assists on Friesen's second goal of the season.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1.
Their were no penalties called on either team, and the Devils outshot
the Hurricanes, 12-5 in the period.
Jeff O'Neill regained the 1 goal lead for the Hurricanes,
6:28 into the second period.
Even though the Hurricanes took three consecutive penalties,
the Devils were unable to capitalize with the advantage (including 54
seconds of 5-3 time).
The second period ended with the Hurricanes leading the
Devils, 2-1. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes, 16-6 in the
period.
The Devils outplayed the Hurricanes in the third period,
but were unable to put the puck past Weekes. The Hurricanes were
unable to get a single shot on goal in the period.
The game ended with the Hurricanes defeating the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 7-0 in the third period,
and 35-11 in the game.
Stephen Guolla left the game with a strained hamstring.
Kevin Weekes appears to have taken the number 1 goaltending
spot for the Hurricanes and is in goal for them tonight. Arturs
Irbe struggling with an 0-3 record.
The game was Martin Brodeur's 600th career NHL game played.
Winger Jay Pandolfo was scratched for the third straight
game to give more time for his groin injury to heal.
Andrei Zyuzin who had been away for personal reasons
re-joined the team, but was a healthy scratch. Tommy Albelin,
recalled from Albany when Zyuzin was away from the team was also a healthy
scratch.
