The New Jersey Devils lost 4-2 to the Islanders, in New York
on Monday, April 1, 2002.
Alexei Yashin gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead over the Devils
at 8:23 of the first period. Yashin roofed the puck over Marty from
just a few feet away.
Saturday night, it was Jay Pandolfo, tonight it was Patrik
Elias as the latest "unlikely" fighter getting 5 minutes for fighting.
There was a scrum with 1:22 left in the period, Patrik Elias came to the
rescue of a teammate and Darren Van Impe decided he wanted to fight Elias.
It wasn't much of a fight, but they were each assesed 5 minutes.
The first period ended with the Islanders leading the Devils
1-0. The Devils outshot the Islanders 10-6 in the period, and won
10 of 18 faceoffs.
Bobby Holik got his 25th goal of the season at 3:05 of the
second period. The goal that tied the game was assisted by Scott
Gomez and Sergei Brylin.
Sergei Brylin gave the Devils a 2-1 lead at 5:24 of the second
period on the power-play by pushing the puck past Osgood from a perfect pass
by Stephane Richer. Bobby Holik also assisted on Brylin's 14th goal of
The second period ended with the Devils leading 2-1.
New Jersey outshot New York 13-7, and won 16 of 26 faceoffs in the period.
Oleg Kvasha tied the game at 6:01 of the third period.
Just 52 seconds later Shawn Bates scored on a breakaway to give the Islanders
a 3-2 lead. Both Islanders goals were unassisted.
Kenny Jonsson scored an empty net goal with 1:37 remaining in
regulation time seal the win for the Islanders.
The game ended with the Islanders winning, 4-2. The
Devils outshot the Islanders 18-8 and won 13 of 21 faceoffs in the third
The final three goals by the Islanders were all unassisted.
Mike Commodore, Andrei Zyuzin, Sergei Nemchinov, Andreas
Salomonsson, and Valeri Kamensky were the scratches for the Devils.
