January 24, 2002 Thrashers Defeat Devils 4-2
The New Jersey Devils were defeated in Atlanta 4-2 by the
Thrashers on Thursday, January 24, 2002. This is the first time
the Atlanta Thrashers have ever beaten the New Jersey Devils.
Valeri Kamensky got the Devils on the scoreboard early, at
1:12 of the first period. Kamensky's 5th goal of the season was
assisted by Sergei Brylin and Bobby Holik.
Bobby Holik got his 15th goal of the season at 13:19 of
the first period on a 5-3 power-play. The goal gave the Devils a
2-0 lead and was assisted by Scott Gomez and Scott Niedermayer.
The first period ended with the Devils leading 2-0.
New Jersey outshot Atlanta 19-2 in the period.
Pascal Rheaume beat Jean-Francois Damphousse just 39 seconds
into the second period, 6 seconds into a Thrashers power-play. Jeff
Odgers tied the game at 9:07.
The second period ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Devils outshot the Thrashers 16-14 in the period.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored just 48 seconds into the third period
to give the Thrashers their first lead of the game.
Tony HrKac got an empty net goal at XX:XX of the third
period to give the Thrashers a 4-2 lead.
The game ended with the Thrashers winning, 4-2, though the
Devils outshot the Thrashers 12-6 in the third period and 47-22 in the
game.
