The New Jersey Devils crushed the Calgary Flames 5-1
at home on Wednesday, January 9, 2002. The is the first 5 goal
game for the Devils since November 24, 2001.
Petr Sykora got his 11th goal of the season at 17:23 of
the first period. The goal was assisted by Christian Berglund
(his first NHL point - in his first NHL game) and Jason Arnott.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Flames,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Flames, 11-6 in the period.
Scott Niedermayer beat Roman Turek high at 2:40 of the
second period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Niedermayer's 6th
goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Sergei Brylin.
Craig Conroy got the Flames back within one goal of the
Devils by beating Damphousse with a blast at 4:48 of the second period.
Scott Niedermayer got his second goal of the game at 14:10
of the second period to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Niedermayer's
7th goal of the season was assisted by Bobby Holik and Jay Pandolfo.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Flames,
3-1. The Flames outshot the Devils, 9-7 in the period.
Sergei Nemchinov beat Turek at 8:12 of the third period.
Bruce Gardiner got his first NHL point by getting the only assist
on Nemchinov's third goal of the season.
Jason Arnott made it a 5-1 lead at 13:05 of the third period
by blasting the puck past Turek right off the faceoff. Arnott's
14th goal of the season was unassisted.
The period ended with the Devils winning the game, 5-1.
The win is Jean-Francois Damphousse's first NHL win. The
Calgary outshot New Jersey 9-5 in the third and 24-23 in the game.
