The New Jersey Devils tied the New York Rangers, 2-2, at
Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, December 19, 2001.
Andrei Zyuzin beat Mike Richter on the power-play at
3:22 of the first period to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead.
Scott Gomez and Scott Niedermayer got assists on Zyuzin's first goal of
Colin White had a clear breakaway and was illegally hooked
down from behind at 5:25 and was awarded a penalty shot. Mike
Richter stopped White's first career penalty shot.
Paul Devorski called two bogus back-to-back penalties on
the Devils at 6:47 & 9:20. The first penalty was a bench minor,
"Too many men on the ice" - when the Devils were simply in the middle of
a line change. The second penalty was called on Scott Niedermayer
for tripping Matthew Barnaby. What should have been a dive on
Barnaby, ended up with the Rangers getting the man-advantage.
Mike York put the puck past Martin Brodeur at 9:58 on the
power-play to tie the game, 1-1.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The
Devils outshot the Rangers 9-8 in the period.
Jeff Toms scored for the Rangers at 5:51 of the second
period to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
Brian Rafalski tied the game at 15:29 of the second, on
the power-play. Rafalski's 5th goal of the season was unassisted.

The Devils outshot the Rangers 14-5 in the second.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. There
was no scoring in the third period, and the shots even 10-10.
There was no scoring in the 5 minute overtime period; the
game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Jay Pandolfo left the game with a rib injury after only 2
shifts in the first period.
Tommy Albelin, Randy McKay, and Pierre Dagenais were the
scratches for the Devils.
