The New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals by
a score of 3-1 at home on Saturday, December 8, 2001.
The first period ended with the game in a scoreless tie.
The Capitals outshot the Devils 7-6 in the period.
Sergei Brylin put the rebound of a Bobby Holik shot past
Olaf Kolzig at 1:04 of the second period. Randy McKay also got an
assist on Brylin's third goal of the season.
Brian Rafalski blasted a puck top shelf past Kolzig at
6:56 of the second to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Colin White
got the only assist on Rafalski's fourth goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Capitals
2-0. The Devils outshot the Capitals 9-5 in the period.
Scott Gomez took a nice pass from Andreas Salomonsson
at 6:28 and put the puck past Kolzig to give the Devils a 3-0 lead.
Tommy Albelin also got an assist on Gomez's second goal of the season.
Sergei Gonchar scored for the Capitals at 16:00 to cut
the Devils lead over the Capitals to 3-1. The Devils outshot the
Capitals 22-19 in the game.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Capitals by
a score of 3-1.
