The New Jersey Devils were defeated 5-4, in overtime by
the Bruins in Boston on Thursday, November 15, 2001.
Ex-Devil, Bill Guerin scored for the Bruins just 18
seconds into the first period. His goal was just part of the
Bruins domination in the opening minutes of the game.
Sergei Nemchinov put the Devils on the board at 11:08
- he put a nice wrist shot past Byron Dafoe. Jay Pandolfo got
an assist on Nemchinov's second goal of the season.
Patrik Elias got his 12th goal of the season at 11:42.
Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora got assists on the goal that gave
the Devils a 2-1 lead.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Bruins
2 goals to one. Martin Brodeur was phenomenal after letting up
the early goal. He faced 19 shots and saved 18. Dafoe
faced 14 Devils shots and saved 12.
Scott Gomez got his first goal of the season at 3:24 in
the first period to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. John Madden and
Brian Rafalski got assists on the goal.
Gill beat Brodeur at 16:55 to bring the Bruins within
The second period ended with the Devils leading 3-2.
The Bruins outshot the Devils 11-9 in the period.
Samsonov scored at 6:13 of the third period to tie the
game 3-3. Strumpel beat Brodeur at 16:37 to give the Bruins a
Bobby Holik scored with 28 seconds left in regulation
time to tie the game and force overtime. Scott Gomez and Patrik
Elias got assists on Holik's 5th goal of the season.
Regulation time ended with the Bruins and Devils tied
4-4. Boston outshot New Jersey 12-7 in the third period.
Joe Thornton beat Marty Brodeur 1:45 into the overtime
period - the Bruins defeated the Devils 5-4. Boston outshot
New Jersey 44-30 in the game.
Tommy Albelin (healthy), Mike Commodore (healthy), and
Sergei Brylin (bruised knee) were scratched by the Devils.
