Devils beat Bruins 4-3 in Overtime
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Bruins in overtime in Boston by a score of 4-3 Tuesday, October 29, 2001.
John Madden beat Byron Dafoe at 7:33 in the first for his first goal of the season to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.   Ken Daneyko and Scott Gomez got assists on the goal.
Scott Niedermayer got an unassisted goal at 14:41 when his centering pass deflected off a Boston defensemans' skate into the net.
The Devils were outshot by the Bruins 12-5 in the first period.   At one point, the shots were 10-1 Boston - with the Devils only shot being John Madden's goal.   The Devils won 19 of 23 faceoffs in the period.
Ex-Devil Bill Guerin scored for the Bruins at 1:22 in the second period to cut the Devils lead to 2-1.
Glen Murray scored for the Bruins at 4:30 to tie the game, 2-2.
The second period ended with the game tied 2-2.   The Bruins outshot the Devils 8-6 in the second period.
John Madden got his second goal of the night (and the season) at 6:58 of the third period.   The goal was assisted by Brian Rafalski.
Boston tied the game 3-3, when Glen Murray got his second goal of the night on the power-play at 14:47.
Regulation time ended with the game tied at 3 goals a piece.   The Devils were outshot 9-6 in the third period.
Just 52 seconds into the overtime period, Scott Niedermayer put a wrist shot into an empty net.   Sergei Brylin set up the whole play.   Brylin brought the puck into the zone, got off a good shot, and forced O'Donnell to make a bad pass - drawing Dafoe way out of his net.   A quick pass to Niedermayer, and the puck was in the net.
The game ended with the Devils winning 4-3.   The Bruins outshot the Devils 30-18 in the game.
Pierre Dagenais and Tommy Albelin were healthy scratches for the Devils.   Jim McKenzie (who played a good, hard game) and Mike Commodore were in the lineup.
