May 17, 2001 Devils Shutout Pens 3-0!
The New Jersey Devils shutout the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-0
to win Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and take the series
lead 2-1.
Brian Rafalski scored for the Devils 8:42 into the first
period, with a nice snap shot to beat Hedberg. Alexander Mogilny
got the only assist on the goal. This goal is Rafalski's fifth goal of
the playoffs - he leads all defenseman in playoff goals. Twelve
seconds into a 5-3 Devils power-play, Jason Arnott scored at 12:37.
Arnott's shot was a nice slap shot that came from a Brian
Rafalski assist.
After the first period, the Devils led 2-0. The
Devils outshot the Penguins 15-8 in the first.
The second period was quiet for both teams. There
was no scoring, and only one penalty. Petr Sykora was assessed
a Hi Stick penalty at 10:46 on Mario Lemieux.
The score remained 2-0 Devils after two periods.
The Devils outshot the Penguins 12-8 in the second, and 27-16 through
two periods.
Patrick Elias scored 1:27 into the third period with a
wrist shot to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. Colin White and Petr
Sykora got assists on the Elias goal. There were no other goals
and there were no penalties in the third period. The Penguins
failed to even get a shot on goal in the first 14 1/2 minutes of the
third period.
Final score of the game, 3-0 Devils Win! The
Devils outshot the Penguins 9-4 in the third period, and 36-20 in the
game.
The Devils had 12 odd-man rushes in the game, compared
to 1 for the Penguins.
Another positive note for the Devils was the play of
Scott Niedermayer. He looked much more comfortable on the ice
than he did in Game 2 (his first game back after the Domi-induced
concussion).
Martin Brodeur got his 11th career playoff shutout, which
ties him with Ed Belfour for seventh in all-time playoff shutouts.
This game was Marty's 100th playoff game.
This shutout was also the first time the Penguins had
been shutout in the playoffs on home ice since (Glenn) Chico Resch
(then of the Islanders) did on April 26, 1975.
Petr Sykora now has a seven-game point streak, and
Patrick Elias now has an eight-game point streak. Brian Rafalski
got his third game-winning goal of these playoffs, by scoring the first
goal (only goal the Devils needed) of the game.
Bob Corkum, Jim McKenzie, and Ken Sutton were scratched,
and Turner Stevenson was back in the lineup for the Devils.
Darius Kasparaitus and Robert Lang were both out with
injuries for the Penguins.
