May 12, 2001Devils WIN Game 1, 3-1!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins
by a score of 3-1 in there Round 3 game opener in New Jersey, on
Saturday, May 12, 2001.
Both Mario Lemieux and Penguins Captain, Jaormir Jagr
were shutdown in the game - the Devils held Jagr to one shot and
Mario to no shots on goal.
The Devils began the game looking flat in the first
period, only getting only three shots on goal. Martin Straka
scored a power-play goal for the Penguins at 3:06. Randy McKay
scored a power-play goal for the Devils with a nice slap shot at 14:09,
with an assist from Brian Rafalski.
Bobby Holik played a very physical game. He
finished his check on Darius Kasparaitus putting a heavy hit on him
in the first period - shoving him over the boards onto the Devils
bench. He also had big hits on Jaromir Jagr and Keven Stevens
later in the game.
The first period ended with the game tied 1-1.
The Devils looked much more alive in the second period,
getting 13 shots on goal. Petr Sykora scored a power-play goal
at 17:04 with assists from Patrick Elias and Scott Stevens.
At the end of the second period, the Devils led 2-1.

After struggling on the power-play in the first round of
the playoffs, the Devils have scored power-play goals in each of their
last seven games. The Devils were 2-3 on the power-play
Martin Brodeur was strong in the last 1:40 of the third
period, with Penguin goalie Hedberg pulled; he almost got an empty net
goal, but the puck was slowed enough that it was retrieved before it
crossed the line.
The Devils are the only team in the playoffs who have
yet to be outshot by their opponent. They also lead all playoff
teams in post-season goals.
