Devils WIN 5-1! Advance to Conf Finals!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game seven of their best of seven Eastern Conference Semi Finals game on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, by a score of 5-1.   With this win, the Devils advance to the Eastern Conference Finals and will face either the Pittsburgh Penguins or Buffalo Sabres (to be decided on Thursday, May 10, 2001).
The first period began a little shaky for the Devils, they were penalized twice (Arnott for hooking and Elias for high sticking).   Steve Thomas scored a power-play goal at 9:06.   The Devils failed to put a puck past Cujo, and had no power-plays.
Toronto led 1-0 after the first period.
The second period began with a bit more fight from the Devils.   Sergei Nemchinov scored just 1:32 into the second period with assists from Alexander Mogilny and Scott Gomez.   On the power-play, Patrick Elias scored at 7:13 with assists from Petr Sykora and Jason Arnott to put the capacity crowd into a frenzy.   Elias scored an even strength goal 1:59 later at 9:12 with assists from Scott Stevens and Jason Arnott to give the Devils a 2 goal lead.   The scoring wasn't over, at 14:41, Scott Stevens scored to make it 4-1 New Jersey, with assists from Randy McKay and John Madden.
At the end of a four goal second period for the Devils, they led 4-1.
The Maple Leafs came out in the third with a little more effort, but were stymied by the Devils.   John Madden capped the scoring at 10:50 in the third to give the Devils a 5-1 lead.   The Leafs did not score after that and seemed to give up with 9:00 left in the game.
Final score of the game, Devils 5, Maple Leafs 1.
Last night, the Devils coaching staff used part of their home-ice advantage - making the last line change.   Any time the tough checking line (Corson, Tucker) were on the ice, the "A" line quickly left the ice.   This gave the line a bit more movement when they were on the ice.
Martin Brodeur made some great saves in the game, stopping 15 of 16 shots.
The three stars of the game were Patrik Elias, Scott Stevens, and Sergei Nemchinov.
