May 07, 2001 Devils WIN 4-2! Force Game 7
The New Jersey Devils won game 6 of their best of
seven series against the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday, May 7, 2001
by a score of 4-2 to force game 7.
Scott Niedermayer and Sergei Brylin were not in the
lineup tonight. Niedermayer spoke publicly for the first time
before the game, since he took the vicious hit from Tie Domi in Game
4 of the series. He said that Domi did threaten him, saying,
"I'm going to take a suspension on you." Brylin is recovering
from sucsessful knee surgery. Ken Sutton and Bob Corkum were
in the lineup and both had great games.
Petr Sykora has scored the first goal of the game at
4:54. The goal was a slap shot from a nice between the legs
pass from Jason Arnott who got the only assist. The quick
goal by the Devils quieted the crowd.
Each fan who entered the arena was gived a sign which
said, "Bring Tie Back 28 28 28". I can't understand how they
can support him, but they apparently are. The crowd at the
Air Canada Centre cheered when it was announced that Scott
Niedermayer was scratched, and booed when it was announced that Tie
Domi would be out of the game.
The first period ended with the Devils leading 1-0.
Steve Thomas scored for the Maple Leafs with a wrist
shot at 5:07 in the second period, on the power-play to tie the
game, 1-1.
Still in the second period, Randy McKay scored at 15:18
with a wrist shot, with assists from Scott Gomez and Alexander
Mogilny. With 8 seconds left in the period, Brian Rafalski put
a wrist shot past CuJo, to make the Devils lead 3-1. Jay
Pandolfo and Turner Stevenson got assists on the goal.
The second period ended with the Devils leading 3-1.
At 1:47 in the third period, Colin White took a
retaliatory 2 minute roughing penalty. At 2:17 in the third,
30 seconds into the Colin White penalty, Mats Sundin scored on the
power-play bring the Leafs within one goal. White went right
to the bench, coach Larry Robinson spoke with him then, and Colin
never returned to the ice.
Jason Arnott scored with a wrist shot at 5:58, with
assists from Patrick Elias and Petr Sykora to give the Devils back
their 2 goal lead.
With 26 seconds left in the game, Randy McKay and
Toronto goaltender Curtis Joseph got into a scuffle. A
pileup ensued, and three minor penalties were assessed to each team
(with 4 minutes to each Randy McKay and Curtis Joseph). As
if these two teams don't have anything else to be fired up, there
may be carry over to Wednesday's game from this..
The final score was 4-2 Devils!
The Devils have scored a power-play goal in each of
the last five games against the Maple Leafs.
The entire team seemed to be playing good "Devils
Hockey" - unlike some of the past few games.. The "A" line
produced well in the game, getting two goals and three assists for
5 points.
