May 03, 2001 Leafs Win 3-1, Domi a Goon
The Toronto Maple Leafs won Game 4 of their best
of seven series against the Devils on Thursday, May 3, 2001.
The final score of the game, played in Toronto, was 3-1. The
series is now tied 2-2, which makes the contest now a best two out
of three series.
Shane Corson scored at 14:38 in the first period to
give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead. Jason Arnott was
cut pretty badly above the eye by a high stick from Nik Antropov, and
had to leave the game temporarily. No penalty was called.
The Devils trailed 0-1 at the end of the first period.
At 1:21 of the second, Sergei Berezin scored for the
Leafs to make it 2-0. Patrick Elias scored a power-play goal
at 9:21, assisted by Petr Sykora and Bobby Holik, to cut the Toronto
lead to 2-1. However, Mats Sundin scored at 10:43, to give
the Leafs back their two goal lead.
At the end of the second period, the Toronto Maple
Leafs led, 3-1.
The Devils had a few good scoring chances in the
third period, but were unable to put the puck past Joseph.
Toronto tightened up and played a solid defensive game in the
third period, holding the Devils to only one shot in the last 9:45
of play.
Tie Domi made the series ugly by putting a disgusting,
unprovoked, vicious, dirty hit on Scott Niedermayer with only
seconds remaining in the game. Domi clearly intentionally
attempted to injure Niedermayer by using his elbow to level the
unsuspecting Devil defenseman. Niedermayer looked to have
been knocked out and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher,
with his head secured. Domi was assessed a match penalty
(deliberate injury), and will be disciplined by the NHL Friday,
May 4, 2001.
