April 28, 2001 Leafs Force OT, Devils WIN 6-5
The New Jersey Devils won Game 2 or their Round 2 best
of seven series against the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5 in overtime, in
NJ, Saturday, April 28, 2001. This OT win marked only the
second overtime win in the last 10 overtime games the Devils have
been in. The only other OT win (in the last 10 OT games) was
the Stanley Cup clinching game 6 of the Finals last year.
Both teams seemed to be playing a bit cautious in the
first period. In the end, Toronto lead 1-0, on a goal from
Markov.
The Devils seemed to have more energy as the second
period began. They dominated, allowing no goals, but scored
four times. Gomez, Rafalski, Mogilny, and Madden got the
goals. Martin Brodeur got an assist on Alexander Mogilny's
goal! Things seemed to be going well for the Devils, as they
left the second period with a three goal lead, 4-1.
Mats Sundin of Toronto scored short-handed, 29
seconds into the third period. But, Alexander Mogilnyu
quickly struck back, scoring his second of the game at 1:07.
Devils Fans began to think everything was wrapped up for
game two, but Toronto scored two more times to make the score
5-4. With Joseph pulled, and the extra skater on the ice,
Steve Thomas of Toronto scored with 23 seconds left to tie the
game and force overtime.
Randy McKay (who was a -4 at the end of regulation)
scored the overtime game winning goal, at 5:31 to tie the Maple
Leafs in the series.
Alexander Mogilny had 2 goals and 3 assists (5
points - playoff career high) and was a +4 for the game.
